Digital Prints!

Every season, with every designer, you can usually find onething that almost all the outfits have in common- and that one thing is thedesigner’s obsession that season. What’s the one thing peppered throughout ourline right now? Digital Prints!

Digital Prints add a whole new intricate dimension thatfabrics were unable to capture in the past. Now, we can literally take a photoof a mesmerizing sunset and have it printed on a scarf, sari, or whatever wewant! This new trend allows prints to be crisper and more complex.

The stars have embraced this trend too. Carrie Underwoodwore a digitally printed dress of pink poppies to the Golden Globes; Cat Deely,the host of So You Think You Can Dance worea digitally printed dress that drew in the eye because of its bold pattern; and KeiraKnightley was seen rocking a floor length digitally printed gown at the OlivierAwards.

If you were at our Masquerade Fashion Show in October, you saw the beginning of our obsession. We absolutely love this story of printed pants, tunics, and dresses!

Every year people sit down and resolve to change their ways. Big changes, small changes, changes that are only made for a week. Although there are a lot of changes that can be made to each one of us here at Silk Threads and we each have our own resolutions, we are also going to try and follow the above quote by Ellen Goodman.

2011 was filled with the birth of new ideas and additions to our team. We started a gorgeous new Indian American fusion line called the SOCIAL list and welcomed Sirisha, Wendy, and Isabell to our team. 2012 will be filled with follow through. We will work hard to make sure that everyone is dressed fabulously and that our new additions feel like one of the family.

Indian brocade big hit among Europeans | Hill Post

Brocade fabrics – that is what many Europeans request for when their friends visit India, says Spanish designer Ana González, pointing out that the traditional craft is earning the country a special place in global fashion.

“The Indian fashion industry is known for their traditionalism. Indian arts and crafts weigh heavily and fabrics are very characteristic. In Europe, when you talk about India and say that you are visiting the country, then people say – ‘bring brocade fabrics’,” González said in an e-mail interview from Madrid, Spain.

“If you talk about Spain, all that people can think of is bullfighting and Flamenco dancing; so it’s like promoting your uniqueness,” added the 41-year-old.

International brands also look at Indian art and craft for inspiration, she said.

“In this age of globalisation, many designers look beyond their frontiers for inspiration in their collections and the art and craft is a big source of inspiration for them. Not only India, I think many other countries too, like Africa, China, Japan, Arabian countries…all exotic and unknown is very attractive for a European,” she said.

"I would love to go to India," Kardashian, in the city to attend Indian-American businessman Vikram Chatwal's 40th birthday bash, told PTI.

She said she loves and is inspired by Indian fashion and clothes that her part-Indian designer friend Rachel Roy wears and is keen to visit the country to experience it herself.

"I would love to just go there (India) and see for myself and get inspired and get some traditional clothes from there," Kardashian said.

"I love all the colours (in Indian culture), love the gold, bangles, which are really popular in the US right now."

Where is the real Paris Hilton? When did one use words like "down-to-earth" for her?

Well apparently she is launching a line of hand-bags in India, and did a photo shoot, where the coordinators were really impressed with her behavior..."I am obsessed with Indian designers. I love the whole Swarovski bling and all those crystals. It is gorgeous and yes, maybe I have designs on some of them for my next outing on the red carpet," says Hilton in an exclusive interview with Neena Haridas, editor, Marie Claire India.

Haridas says that during the shoot, Paris was quite the anti-thesis of the fussy image she has. “The Paris we saw was down-to-earth, and a determined businesswoman. Our fashion editor and her team of stylists chose the looks, the mood and the clothes for the shoot, and insisted on styling her in Indian couture. Paris was nervous about the sari, so were we. But she has now fallen in love with Indian clothes, and wants to learn to drape a sari.” When asked if the otherwise reckless Paris has finally grown up, Hilton says, “I think I am in the process of growing up. I am a lot more focussed on work. I have grown up so much in the last few years. I have changed the way I look at the world. I have always wanted to build a business empire of my own, not just live off of the Hilton legacy. That is my priority.”

First of all, if you are in Dallas next Friday night (9/30), the place to be is Deep Ellum, where we are holding our 2nd Annual Fashion Event and Fundraiser . This year's theme is "Masquerade" - so you'll see a theatrical interpretation of our creative team, including Ruby Bhandari, and upcoming designers Vanita Tahim and Sidra Zaidi. We have been working hard for the last few months on this, and are very excited about the outcome. In addition, we will have a surprise launch, with hints of youth, individuality, and the Nehru jacket!

S o the last few weeks saw big Fashion Weeks happening in New York and India - a good review of one we found interesting, Tarun Tahiliani in Vogue India: "Those expecting a classic Tarun Tahiliani collection were in for a surprise this year. The veteran designer ventured into smart tailoring and Chinoiserie details for his Autumn/Winter 2011 collection. He managed to successful blend the Oriental influences with Indian aesthetics in pieces like kalidar kurtas teamed with embroidered jackets and resham kaftans with Sino embroidery. The colour choices didn't sway from the general winter theme with reds, teals, muted wines and charcoals. While Tahiliani managed to cleverly introduce paisley prints and shibori handwork, he retained his signature jersey drapes throughout the collection. Kudos to the designer for the generous use of palazzo pants, obi belts with saris and trapeze jackets that make the collection very wearable...."

We have been featuring longer jackets with readymade saris for quite a few months, but love his interpretation of this sari and jacket...

On the New York front, one of the Indian-inspired collections has been from Timo Weiland. As LA Times put it, "The pair presented 23 looks at the Lincoln Center tents that paid homage to British colonial life -- in India. On the women's side, that inspiration resulted in glen plaid skirts and jackets with ikat jacquard inlays, bold red windowpane plaids that evoked the look of the Union Jack, a Bengal tiger jacquard, and an almost pointillist snow-covered desert landscape print in a range of blues, pinks and a pop of yellow, that appears on dresses, gowns and coats..."

Something for the men - Nehrus jackets have been popular since the sixties, with fans such as the Beatles. The jacket returns in several reincarnations, which can be seen at our showroom. From the artilce: "Now : The fad resurfaced in the early 2000s. In 2002, designer Ermenegildo Zegna designed a ‘guru suit’ with a Nehru jacket. And in 2009, John Mayer turned up at the 51st Grammy Awards in a Giorgio Armani’s military-inspired black suit with a Nehru jacket.

Designer Arjun Khanna points out that the jacket has become more fitted compared to its earlier boxy version and can be easily paired with jeans. “My Nehru jackets had a variety of fabrics from velvet and leather to linen and wool. For some jackets, I have thrown in zippers to lend them an edgy biker feel. I have included watch buttons and embroidery too,” he notes".

As we get to the Fall season, the old classics are coming back - starting with the reinvention of the black shawl! Everyone I know has a black shawl, and has worn in several different ways, but when Vogue teamed up with some of India's top designers like Rajesh Pratap Singh, Manish Malhotra, JJ Valaya, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Anamika Khanna, Suneet Varma, Falguni and Shane Peacock, Rocky S, Manish Arora, etc, I had to sit up and take notice...especially as its Fashions Night Out tonight...

The results apparently are fab...as the article states, "Manish Malhotra, who has used an amalgamation of traditional and modern techniques for his creation, says, “The shawl uses intricate Kashmiri work, zardozi work, cutwork and is finished by gota lace with my signature tassel that gives it an exclusive couture feel.” Ashish Soni on the other hand claims to have translated the little black shawl into tangible dreams. “The shawl is defined with a collar cape adorned with a button. It is as drape-y in nature, defining the signature design parameters that I follow,” he says.

Talking about her creation Anamika Khanna says, “The shawl has been designed with a Japanese shibori technique. It looks the best when paired with a deconstructed antiquated gold texture skirt.” However, for Rohit Gandhi & Rahul Khanna the fringe look was their inspiration. “We decided to stitch the shawl a little differently and instead of using it the normal way, we gave it a cape like structure and added a metallic touch,” they say."

90210 Finale - Indian wedding of Raj and Ivy!

How many of you are a fan on the CW show 90210? If you watched the season finale, 90210 ended with an Indian wedding between Ivy and Raj. The outfits were just plain gorgeous and everyone looked fabulous! Ivy is considered to have a surfer/tomboy look, but in this episode she came out with a beautiful red bridal outfit with subtle makeup except her bright red lips! She looked great!

Now for the wedding guests, Naomi, which had on my favorite outfit in the show. She wore a blue green color sari dress. The material is made out of gorgeous Indian silk fabric with a hint of gold. She looks stunning in this color! This picture does not do justice....see the actual episode for details!

"Kaftans, which have been popular as a wedding dress only in Pakistan so far, are now making their way into the Indian fashion industry as well. Confirms designer Jattin Kochhar who has come up with kaftans that are similar to ponchos in look and feel. “But these kaftans are stitched and designed in such a way that they cover the legs too, unlike the ponchos. The most popular colour combinations in these are white with rainbow embroidery, black with silver needlework and the grouping of white-black and red-black,” Kochhar says. What’s more interesting is that Kochhar’s wedding garments have been made in such a way that the brides can wear them to a discothèque as well. “If a young bride is planning to go clubbing after the ceremony, she can wear a churidaar dress without leggings and dupatta,” he adds. I was accompanied by 2 of The BF’s cousins and his mom, who was going to buy me three outfits from the market for the wedding festivities. These suits were to supplement the two saris that were ready and waiting for me in Mumbai. It had already been a long and busy day of settling into our accommodations, meeting family over lunch, and experiencing Indian traffic during the day for the first terrifying time of my life. For those of you in Texas, this is the short period of time where we can breathe outside (except when it is a heavy pollen day!), before the long, stifling summer strikes...but the colors of the flowers in bloom can make it a memorable pleasure...

So what have we been busy with? Quite a bit, as it turns out...on the casuals and tunics side, we had very successful wholesale markets in Vegas and Dallas, leading us to believe that the economy may finally be turning around. Luckily, most of the over 400 stores we supply to weathered the economic downturn, and are back stocking up their inventory...you can see, and buy, some of our latest designs here...

On the ethnic side, it seems like everyone is getting married! We have been busy designing for the modern bride and groom - who are not afraid to experiment with colors and accessories. This season, 3-D flowers, flares, embroideries and mixed fabric textures are in - In fact, we did a photo shoot with some of our new designs - see a sample attached - and you will be seeing them soon exclusively on our web site.

The American Cancer Society was the charity of choice at Silk Threads, Inc.'s April 25 launch of their new collection. The exclusive, invitation only event was held at the Rosewood Crescent Hotel in Dallas. At the close of the fashion show, Society Regional Vice President Maria Clark was presented with a $2,000 check from Raj Bhandari, Silk Threads co-owner and long-time volunteer.

"Mr. Bhandari has served on our Dallas Executive Management Board for many years. He has been very influential in helping us elevate cancer awareness in our communities, raise funds, and cultivate collaborators who share in our vision to eliminate cancer," said Clark. "We are thankful for Silk Threads' support in our fight against cancer and honored to be a part of such an exciting event."

The collection showcased traditional South Asian bridal wear, as well as more trendy tunics.
